AWOMAN from Southend will trek for six consecutive days along one of the world’s true wonders for charity.

Karen Kelly, a team leader at Homebase, in Southend, is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society with a six-day trek from Huangyaguan to Mutianyu, along the Great Wall of China.

Starting on September 27, Karen will join 36 colleagues from Argos and Homebase stores across the country.

The group are hoping to raise a remarkable £120,000 to support those living with dementia and in order to reach her own personal target Karen has held bake sales, quiz and race nights.

She said: “My father-in-law died with dementia and I currently have a friend with the condition in hospital.

“Conquering the Great Wall of China is certainly a very daunting thought, but I’m thrilled to be fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society.

“I’m very happy to take on this challenge step by step, knowing my fundraising will support people living with condition in my local area.”

About 225,000 people in the UK develop dementia every year and both Homebase and Argos have chosen the Alzheimer’s Society as their charity partner from 2013 to 2015.

All the money raised will go to helping thousands of people with the condition stay in their own home and be part of community life for longer.

The money will specifically be spent on funding Singing for the Brain groups, Dementia Cafes and support services around the UK and Ireland.
