LORRIES should be banned from a Canvey road over fears the damage they cause leads to flooding, residents claim.

People living in Seaview Road, Canvey, claim buses and lorries are destroying their street, homes and drainage system.

There is no weight restriction on the road and vehicles are limited to 30mph, but residents say something must be done after they suffered bad flooding in July, which they believe was caused after lorries damaged the drains.

David Last, 70, said: “These are heavy industrial lorries and they have definitely affected the roads.

“The road is falling apart and it all goes down the drains.

“The drains are inadequate for the amount of water they need to take.

“I think the pipes have sunk.

Outside our house water is collecting like a basin.”

Rob Welton, 38, of Seaview Road, said: “The lorries are too heavy and making the house jump causing cracks in the walls and damage the skirting.

“It damages the foundations, the roads, garden walls and the drains. The road is falling apart.

“Another road is needed for these vehicles and traffic calming measures put into place.”

Mr Last added: “I want a new road from Eastern Esplanade to continue round the seawall up to Point Road so that lorries and buses can use a B road all the way around.

“The drains are compacted, they need to clean up or install proper ones.

“We need chicanes at either end and we want police there.”

County councillor Dave Blackwell is calling for an investigation into the road.

He said: “Highways need to do an investigation. This could well be affecting the drains and it is something we have never thought about. The roads were not built for these heavy industrial buses and lorries. The county council need to look at it.”

A county council spokesman said: “Essex County Council welcomes feedback from the public. We are unaware of any current issue with the road surface on Seaview Road.

“However, if a member of the public reports a specific road defect we are then able to arrange to have it assessed .”
