SHAMED former Cabinet minister Chris Huhne is to appeal against court costs he was ordered to pay after lying about speeding on the M11 in Essex.

One-time Lib Dem MP Huhne, 60, was jailed last year for asking his then wife Vicky Pryce, 61, to accept points on her licence to avoid him being banned from driving The former Energy and Climate Change Secretary was caught speeding on the M11, near Stansted Airport, in 2003.

The points swapping allegations came to light eight years later and led to both Huhne and Pryce each being jailed for eight months. Both were freed last summer after serving a quarter of their sentences.

However, as well as the jail time, both were ordered to pay the costs of their prosecution.

Huhne originally offered £25,000, but this was rejected and he was ordered to pay £77,750.

The huge bill was largely because Huhne denied perverting the course of justice right up until his trial was due to start in January 2013.

He will appeal against the order for costs in the High Court on Tuesday, October 28.

Huhne resigned his ministerial post after being charged and quit as MP after admitting the offence in court.

Speaking at the time, he said: “Going to jail is a fairly small bit of the total penalty. What was really painful was losing the one job I really wanted to do.”

Passing sentence, trial judge Mr Justice Sweeney said Huhne had lied “again and again” and fallen from “a great height”.

Pryce, who told the press about the speeding points scam after learning her husband had had an affair is not appealing over her own £38,544 order for costs.
