THE family of a boy with severe epilepsy have told how their lives changed overnight after a crack team of DIY experts transformed their home.

The Lowther family’s story is set to touch the hearts of the nation when it is aired on television next week.

A team of builders from primetime BBC One series DIY SOS spent nine days at the house in Fryerns, Basildon, back in February creating a downstairs bedroom and wetroom for ten year-old Brandon.

The youngster has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, a rare condition which is impossible to cure.

It means he has between 20 and 30 seizures a day and needs round-the-clock care.

Before the DIY SOS team worked their magic, mum Jenny, 28, and dad Steven, 33, had to take it in turns to sleep on the sofa or living room floor with Brandon.

Mrs Lowther said: “When we sawwhat they had done we were just so overwhelmed. We’re so grateful to everyone who has given up their time, and we can’t thank them enough. It’s amazing.

“The whole team were lovely, and just the same as how they are on the TV. They’re all really caring and considerate, and just want to do a good job.”

The family is also benefitting from a bigger kitchen, new living room and revamped garden, and the whole downstairs is now wheelchair friendly.

The team of builders also made over Mr and Mrs Lowther’s bedroom, as well as younger sister Katie’s.

Brandon’s condition means he cannot speak and has severe learning difficulties. Friend Abby Feltham got in touch with the producers after seeing the difficulties the couple face, on a daily basis.

The episode will air on BBC One, at 9pm on Tuesday.
