Planes were diverted to land at Southend Airport after a passenger jet was forced into an emergency landing at Gatwick.
A Virgin Atlantic service from Gatwick to Las Vegas was forced to return to the West Sussex terminal after a "technical issue" with part of its main landing gear.
It landed safely at about 4pm, but the runway was closed and other flights scheduled to land at the site were diverted to other airports in the region.
Flights from Toulouse and Bordeaux, in France, both landed at Southend Airport at 5.30pm and 5.45pm respectively.
