A PROPOSAL to build a new two-storey GP surgery in Wickford town centre is expected to be given the go-ahead by councillors tomorrow.

Formal plans for the surgery, in Market Road, have been recommended for approval by Basildon Council planning officers.

The new building would replace the existing clinic in London Road.

Patients in the town often complain of long waits to get an appointment to see a doctor because the town is short of GPs – with each GP serving 1,767 residents.

The planners’ report says: “It has been identified additional GPs are urgently needed within Wickford to bring services to the standards expected by local residents.

“The proposals accord with relevant planning policy advice, and would help towards meeting the need for improvement to GP services within Wickford, creating a modern surgery facility in a sustainable and highly-accessible location within Wickford town centre.

“Additionally, it would assist in the regeneration of the town centre.

“The design of the building would enhance the character of the street.”

The £2million scheme was given outline permission last summer, but critics had called on the NHS to provide more than just basic GP services at the new clinic.

Councillors Michael Mowe and David Harrison even met NHS England officials to push for extra services, including blood testing and ultrasound scans to be provided there.

The new development will include 20 parking spaces.
