A SCHOOL and community have been left in shock after a schoolboy died suddenly during the Easter holidays.

Tommy Stiffel, 15, from Wickford, was taken to Basildon Hospital on Sunday, April 5, where he was later pronounced dead.

Classmates at Beauchamps High School, in Beauchamps Drive, Wickford, were told of his unexpected death during special assemblies on Monday, the first day of the summer term.

Counselling and support are being offered to pupils affected by the tragic news, and a book of condolence has been set up so Tommy’s memory can live on at Beauchamps.

Headteacher Bob Hodges said: “Our thoughts are with Tommy’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. The school has been in contact with the family to offer condolences from the staff and students.

“Tommy had a close network of friends and gained the respect of staff. He will be greatly missed within our school community.

“Students will be discussing ideas for a memorial to Tommy in the school.”

Michael Mowe, a governor at Beauchamps and Tory ward councillor for Wickford North ward, has visited the Stiffel family since the death.

He added: "My grandaughter goes to Beauchamps and was in the same form group as Tommy. It’s a very difficult time for all the pupils, but they are getting the right support from staff. A lot of them have bought in flowers to show their respects.

“I went to see his family and gave them my condolences.

It’s always tragic for someone to die at such a young age.”

An inquest into Tommy’s death has been opened and adjourned.
