If you want gorgeous, defined, frizz-free curls without using any heat or styling tools, then it is time to ‘plop’.

This latest hair trend of course originated in the USA and has become a real craze.

Plopping involves putting your wet hair into a T-shirt or piece of cotton material and then fashioning a turban on your head which you then sleep in.

A T-shirt is exactly the kind of cotton you want to make this trend work as your usual towel draws moisture from the hair, ruffles up the hair cuticles and prevents defined curls from forming.

With plopping, the curls form beautifully and, as they are set above the head, you get fantastic bounce and definition. With more celebrities embracing their curls, this is one trend curly haired girls will want to embrace. Think Sarah Jessica Parker, and enjoy a frizz free mane.

So, if you fancy giving it a go, here’s how in several easy to follow steps put together by Angela Mitchell, creative director of Alter Ego salon, Colchester, who taught the technique to students at Southend’s Central Hairdressing Academy.

Start with damp, prewashed hair. Work some Alterna Anti-Frizz curl defining cream in.

Lay out a cotton t-shirt on a flat surface and then plop your head onto the t-shirt, placing your forehead on the bottom seam. Wrap the first side around the head and then do the same on the other side before tucking to secure.

Fold the top over to the back of the head and pull out T-shirt arms to wrap to the front. Take the arms round to the front and then tie to secure. Sleep with the T-shirt in place and remove the next morning.

Gently shake out all the curls and finish with a spritz of Alterna’s curl reactivating spray to further define curls.
