PARENTS in south Essex were given advice about what to do if their child got ill at an NHS event.

The event, held in Rayleigh, was aimed at educating parents or carers about common childhood illnesses.

The event, attended by over 50 parents and carers of young children provided information about what to do, what to look out for and where to go.   Thames Ambulance also gave a first aid demonstration, using props to show how to help a child who is choking or needs to be resuscitated.

A local GP, Dr Luke Whiting from Audley Mills GP Practice in Rayleigh hosted the event and gave advice on the most appropriate health services available to parents/carers in different circumstances.

Dr Luke Whiting said, “When a child is ill, getting the right care is a priority.  We’ve had some really positive feedback about the event, I’m glad that we’ve been able to explode some common myths and help local parents feel more in control.

"There are lots of local services that can help when a child is unwell – people told us they’d never think of seeking advice from a pharmacist for instance.  There was also a lot of scepticism about the NHS 111 service too, which is a great option if parent are worried and want a clinical point of view. ”

The event was promoted via a local Facebook forum called ‘8 out of 10 Mums.’  The founder of the forum Sam Keeling said, “The event has gone down really well with local mums, it has received lots of positive feedback.  I hope there are more of these events as there is a clear demand. Mums are constantly posting on ‘8 out of 10 Mums’ for health advice from other mums, what to do and where to go – it’s important that mums and dads are well informed.”

Local mum, Suzi Stiller Areoff said: “It was a very informative evening. Carry on doing more.”  Jemma Dawn, local mums said: “Really great evening, well done for organising.”

Due to the success of the event, a similar event is being planned in Southend.  The details of this event are yet to be confirmed.
