A LOLLIPOP lady was hit by a car outside a school prompting calls for traffic lights.

The woman was struck by a Nissan Note outside Rochford Primary School, at 8.45am as children were arriving.

She had stepped into the white hatched area with her stick to stop the traffic, when she was hit and suffered slight injuries.

She was taken into the school hall where she was looked after until the ambulance service arrived. She did not need to go to hospital.

Sam Gaulton, whose children Illana and Luca attend the school, said she would like traffic lights outside it, because too many cars just did not stop when passing through the crossing, which is just yards from a mini-roundabout at the bottom of Ashingdon Road. She added: “They need to put lights on. As soon as she steps out she puts her life at risk.

“Quite a lot of the children were aware of the incident because she was taken into the school hall.

“The traffic down there does not stop and it comes at speed.

“Even if the lollipop lady is on the crossing there are motorists who think ‘right, I amgoing to go,’ and they get shirty.

“There have been occasions when people have been shouting at her.”

Mum Emily Johnston, whose son Eddie, five, is a pupil at Rochford Primary School, said she would like the crossing to be moved further up the road with added traffic lights to give motorists time to slow down.

She said: “That pedestrian crossing is a nightmare, because people just don’t stop.

“It has been an accident waiting to happen really. People shout and get angry with her when there are schoolchildren crossing.”

Lauren Barham, who has a son Lucas, four, at the school, said there was also an issue with parking at the school because there were zig-zag lines in Ashingdon Road, preventing parking which meant parents had to park further away from the school in residential roads.

She added: “I would like to see traffic calming measures in place.

The vehicles should be slowing down.”
