CROWDS of people turned out for the annual event of turning on the Hockley Christmas lights.

The revellers enjoyed a fun filled family evening with plenty of entertainment in Spa Road, Hockley on Saturday November 21.

There was a children’s colouring competition and the winners had the chance to switch on the Christmas lights.

The lights were switched on around 5.30pm and were followed by an impressive firework display.

Three Hockley schools played a part in this year’s event, the Plumberow Primary Academy, the Hockley Primary and The Westerings Primary School all joined in with the fun.

There was a choir, jive dancing, plenty of stalls and of course Santa made an appearance on his sleigh as sponsored by the Rockford Rotary club.

Councillor Roy Martin, chairman of Hockley Parish Council said: “It went really well, we didn’t have as many people turn out as in previous years but I think that could have been down to the cold weather.

“There was a friendly family atmosphere and it was a family evening out.

“The lights switch on was followed by a firework display lasting about ten minutes, it was excellent.”
