A LITTLE dog whose back legs were paralysed when she was injured in India is now racing around after being given a set of wheels.

Indy was brought back from India in September by a couple who spotted her while on holiday.

Animal lovers Ian Warner and Angela Szczypka, of Kingsley Lane, Benfleet, went to the Animal Rescue Canaconda, in Goa, India, during their holiday just to make a donation.

While there they fell in love with little mongrel Indy who had been rescued by the centre. The two-month-old pup had suffered a horrific injury to her spine after being attacked by another dog. Though the injury healed she lost the use of her back legs.

After spending time with her, the couple decided to bring her home following a period of quarantine in Goa.

At first she had to wear nappies around the house and could only drag herself around but the wheels, made by a specialist in Kent, have transformed her life.

Miss Szczpka, 29, who runs Rayleigh View Nursery with her partner, was six months pregnant when Indy arrived and on Boxing Day the couple welcomed their son Tobias into the world so it has been a busy time for them.

She said: “She’s doing very well and she’s very happy. She goes for a walk in the morning and then spends the day in her bed by the radiator. She’s as good a gold really. She’s house trained now and learning to go outside so she’s out of her nappies.

“She took to the wheels really well. She’s really adapted to them. Once we put them on she started racing around. She’s been through the woods and we took her to the beach and she went through the water. She loved it.

“She’s only had one accident when she tried to climb a tree and left her wheels behind.

She added: “It’s been hard work since Tobias arrived but we’re coping. I just got one out of nappies now I have another so we’ve had our hands full but it’s fine.”

The couple are fundraising to see if Indy’s mobility can be improved.

Miss Szczpka said: “We are trying to raise money for her to see a super vet to see if anything can be done to help her walk again. Because she can still wag her tail the vet said there is a very small chance something can be done.

“The consultation will cost £250 and it depends on what they find. The treatment could cost thousands or there might be nothing they can do but we want to give her that chance.”
