SOUTHEND’S Vulcan bomber will be open for business again this month.

The XL426 aircraft, which has recently had its engines switched on and moved around the airfield, will be open to the public for the first time this season on Sunday, April 24.

Although the Cold War bomber is not airworthy, it is kept in ground-running condition, with the Vulcan Restoration Trust keeping it in peak condition year round.

Trust secretary Richard Clarkson said: "Although the bomber will not be on the move for our open days it is always good to see the aircraft engines running.

“We hope you will come and visit and climb into the fascinating cockpit of this iconic Vulcan at one of our open days.

“It all helps this important charity to raise the money needed to keep it in good order.”

Gates to the Vulcan will be open at 10am, with last admissions at 4pm, with a charge of £4 and free admission for children under 16 to walk under the delta wings – the same technology which was later used on Concorde – and an additional £3.50 to sit in the cockpit.
