A PUB'S ceiling collapsed almost hitting a customer only two months after it was refurbished.

A section of the ceiling The Alex, in Alexandra Street, Southend, collapsed yesterday evening while customers were in the pub - with one saying it fell above the table where his wife was sitting.

Echo:

Twitter user Chris Johnson (@creown) tweeted: "The Alex after @StonegatePubs refurbishment - that table is where my wife was sitting!!!!" before asking Stonegate's account "after a ceiling collapses on customers is it normal to be refused manager and head office details????"

The Alex reopened on January 30 following a £300,000 refurbishment converting the pub from Stonegate's Scream branding to its Common Room format.

Echo:

General manager Andy Pipe said: “Specialist contractors are currently on site at The Alex following part of the ceiling collapsing last night.

"Our management team evacuated everyone to safety immediately and no-one was injured.

"The damage is currently being assessed and normal business will resume as soon as it is safe to do so”.

The company also owns Slug and Lettuce, which was also recently refurbished in Southchurch Avenue.
