A DISTRESSED woman discovered near train tracks has been taken to safety by the emergency services this morning.

She was found near the line between Benfleet and Leigh station at about 7.30am this morning. 

The rescue operation saw five police cars and an ambulance rush to her aid and the railway temporarily closed. 

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman, said: “Officers were called to the line close to Benfleet station at approximately 7.30am this morning, following reports of a distressed woman near the tracks.

“Officers from British Transport Police, Essex Police and paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service attended and as a precaution, the railway was momentarily closed so that officers could safely talk with the woman.

"She has since been taken to a place of safety.”

A C2C spokesman said regularly service has since been resumed.

He added: "Police were dealing with a member of the public on the tracks between Basildon and Leigh. 

"Our train stopped while police dealt with the incident. 

"What the person was doing we do not know."
