MORE than 1,000 people turned out to enjoy the annual Canvey Carnival.

A procession of 24 floats made its way through the town from Thorney Bay campsite, before travelling through the town and finishing back at the campsite.

A festival followed, with rides, games and stalls.

Floats included those from local voluntary groups and businesses, including Concord Rangers Football Club, Mornington Boys Football Club, majorette troops, the coastguard, Cat’s Protection and the fire brigade.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, funeral parlour Stibbards and Sons brought along a horse and carriage, filling the carriage with balloons that people could dedicate to loved ones who had died.

The balloons were then released at the festival.

Zoe Watson, chairman of the association, said: “It has been really good - we are very pleased.

“I reckon there were between 1,000 and 1,500 people who came out to see it.

“I think my favourite float was the Mornington Boys Football Club who came as pirates in a pirate ship.”

“It was all good fun.”

Joan Liddiard, one of the organisers, added: “The carnival went really well.

“Lots of people turned up - I would say in the thousands.”
