TWO men are receiving hospital treatment for gunshot wounds to their upper body following an incident in Canvey overnight.
Police were contacted at about 3.30am today following reports of a firearms incident in Somnes Avenue.
The victims, aged in their twenties and from Canvey, remain in hospital for treatment to injuries "which are not believed to be life-threatening", an Essex Police spokesman said.
The spokesman added: "Officers continue to make enquiries in the area and a cordon is in place at the scene.
"A 22-year-old man from Canvey has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody for questioning.
"Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to call officers at Southend CID on 101.
"Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org."
Sommes Avenue was closed in both directions between the Waterside Roundabout and the Elsinor Avenue junction until 1pm.
A car in Second Avenue, understood to have been connected to the incident.
