FIRE crews tackled a blaze in a takeaway shop that had spread to the flats upstairs.
Emergency services were called to reports of an electrics sparking in Chaudhry's Tandoori in London Road, Westcliff, at about 10.40pm last night.
When crews arrrived, they found the ground floor was heavily smoke logged and sparks coming from the electrical cupboard.
Three fire engines from Southend, Rayleigh Weir and Rochford attended the incident along with the aerial ladder platform (ALP) from Southend.
Station Officer Barrie May from Southend fire station said: "When we arrived, the ground floor takeaway shop was heavily smoke logged and we could see sparks coming from the electrical cupboard.
"As the electric was still live, it was too dangerous to enter the property, so we tackled the fire from outside. Crews used three main jets, two hose reel jets and a hose from the ALP.
"The fire spread through voids to the flat upstairs and to the roof. Crews did an excellent job tackling the fire and stopping it from spreading to the shop and flat next door."
