A COUNCIL leader says he hasn’t ruled out using compulsory purchase orders in a bid to drive the next phase of Wickford’s regeneration.
It comes as councillors met on Thursday to discuss how it intends to continue the town’s revamp.
Phil Turner, leader of Basildon Council, says that while the authority has yet to officially lay plans down, it is considering all options and is prepared to use purchase order if necessary.
He said: “Wickford is my priority and a place we have to get right in terms of regeneration.
“The council does have the power to use CPOs which are only used as a last resort, but this is something we would definitely consider using if it helped us to deliver the right plan for the town.
“We have made great progress in regenerating Wickford High Street, improving the environment, revitalising the market and providing a state-of-the-art new health centre.
“We now need to look at other aspects of Wickford, to ensure that the quality of life for our residents is further enhanced.
“From the meeting yesterday, we can now move to create firm plans for areas that still need improvement.”
