BASILDON fire station celebrated its most successful open day.

Thousands of people flocked to the station, in Broadmayne, for the annual event.

Firefighters demonstrated a chip pan fire and how they removed the roof of a car and removed a casualty, as well as having stalls.

Officer in charge Dan Kirk said they had raised a lot of money for several charities, including the Fire Fighters Charity, the RNLI and the Air Ambulance.

He added: "It was a brilliant day - it was super.

"I'm not sure exactly how many people attended throughout the day, but it must be in its thousands.

"It was the best event we have ever had.

"Everyone seemed to really enjoy the demonstrations.

"They all liked the chip pan fires and the rescue because unless they have driven past a road accident, they wouldn't have seen how we cut someone out."
