THE lack of an accompanist didn’t stop the Leigh Orpheus’s Mayoral Concert going ahead and raising £700 for Southend YMCA.

The sudden lack of availability of their regular accompanist might have caused problems for some choirs about to host an important concert. Not so for the recent Mayoral Concert the Leigh Orpheus choir was due to put on in aid of Southend mayor Judith McMahon’s chosen charity, Southend YMCA.

With only one further rehearsal to get things right, the choir’s two deputy musical directors stepped in. Regular conductor Janet Walker moved over to the piano as temporary accompanist.

Southend West MP Sir David Amess, who is president of both the choir and the Southend YMCA, attended the concert at Avenue Baptist Church, in Milton Road, Southend, along with Southend YMCA’s chief executive Syrie Cox.

The proceeds of the concert, along with money raised from a performance at The Royals before Christmas, meant that £700 will be donated by the choir.
