FEARS a former Austrian restaurant could become flats have emerged as it was revealed the landmark building could soon be demolished.

The Old Vienna, Leigh, closed last year after a damning hygiene inspection and went on the market in August for almost £1million - it sold the same month.

The new owner, who has not yet been revealed, indicated the striking building in Eastwood Road would be revamped and could become an Italian restaurant.

However, an application has now been lodged with Southend Council seeking permission to tear the building down, raising fears a flats plan will follow.

An application to planners said: “Due to the overall condition of the property, and the subsequent risk of unauthorised entry, it is now proposed to demolish the structure whilst discussions take place with the local authority with regards to a replacement.”

Belfairs Ward councillor Stephen Aylen said: “This comes as a surprise. They have already taken the front of the building down. A whole chunk of it, right across the front of the building is completely gone.

“There was a single floor that stuck out of the front of the building, but that’s gone too.

“When it first went up for sale I thought it might be turned into flats.”

Mr Aylen believes the Belfairs area is screaming out for a high quality restaurant. He said: “It is hoped new owners would bring in, through a restaurant, a much needed boost to the local economy.

“It’s sad news to learn of the possible demolition of this historic building with its art deco style. Let’s just hope a restaurant will rise from the ashes, not flats. The thing is there is no parking there.

“It will be interesting to see what they do, but I’d lay paper money on it being flats.”

Leigh ward councillor Carole Mulroney was also surprised. She said: “We were all under the impression it would remain as a restaurant.

“I wouldn’t want to hazard a guess at what it will be, but flats seem to be the in thing at the moment. And it is a prime site.”

John Arthurs, 54, of nearby Manchester Drive, Leigh, said: “I want a restaurant, please, not more flats! Parking is horrendous around here as it is.”

The agent on behalf of the owner was unable to provide any more details.
