COUNCILLORS have called for action to spearhead a range of short-term schemes to revitalise Southend seafront.

Last month, Southend Council released a study suggesting themed markets, buskers, events on the former bowling alley site, maritime events, and art exhibitions on the pier walkway.

It also included proposals in the medium term for a fun pool on the seafront.

Lib Dem group leader Graham Longley, one of the architects of the report, said he was concerned the proposals could be held up because they were being sent to the council's pier and foreshore working party for consideration.

He told the full council: "We proposed it should be done by a small group of about three councillors so we could get on with things.

"If it goes to the pier and foreshore working party it is unlikely there will be a meeting before September which means it will be next year before anything is done."

Deputy leader and chairman of the working party John Lamb said it was intended to move forward as quickly as possible. He said: "I can certainly say the working party will be meeting sooner rather than later to get on with things."

David Garston (Con, Southchurch) said he felt the fun pool proposals should be progressed as quickly as possible.

He added: "If we are proposing moving the main swimming pool in the town from Warrior Square to Garon Park then it is essential we continue to provide a pool within the town centre area."

Jim Clinkscales (Lib Dem, Blenheim Park) said he was concerned the connection between the High Street and seafront was not properly signposted.

He added: "Many people are still not aware of the existence of the lifts on Pier Hill as there are no signposts to them. This is not helping to encourage tourism to the town."

Mr Lamb said the council was seeking funding for proper signage rather than doing things piecemeal.
