CALLS for a forum to bring travellers and residents together have been dismissed by villagers in Crays Hill.

Travellers' supporter, Ameri-can student Zach Scott believes residents should meet travellers, so each can gain a better understanding of the other.

Mr Scott, a volunteer from a Washington-based human rights organisation, is living at the Dale Farm traveller site in Oak Lane, to help in their battle against eviction from the unauthorised camp.

He said: "I feel it would be extremely productive to organise a forum in which residents from Wickford, Crays Hill, Basildon and Billericay could meet travellers from Dale Farm to discuss some of the issues surrounding the eviction proceedings, as well as the history and culture of travellers."

But Ramsden Crays Parish Council has declined the offer.

Council chairman David McPherson-Davis said: "These issues have been discussed at countless planning inquiries and the site has already been ruled to be illegal.

"It is solely a planning issue and there is nothing left to discuss."

Crays Hill Residents' Association agrees with the council.

However, Mr Scott is still keen to get individual members of the community involved in talks.
