THE hunt is on for mystery benefactors who have secretly been giving money to elderly shoppers.

Alfred Shore, 91, spoke of his joy after he received a gift of £10 while doing his shopping in Morrisons, in Western Approaches, Eastwood.

Mr Shore, who lives in Eastwood, said: “I was doing my shopping and left my trolley for a moment to get some bananas.

“When I turned back there was an envelope on my trolley. Inside was £10 and a note saying ‘just a little something towards your shopping today. Grace and peace!’

“I showed it to the lady at the till and she said it wasn’t the first time it has happened. Somebody else had been given £10.

“It shows there are some good people around. I didn’t see who put it in my trolley but I want to thank them very much.”

A store worker said she believes a couple who regularly visit the supermarket are behind the mystery donations.

Services manager Sarah Oliver said: “We think its a couple that come in and give £10 to ‘make someone’s day’ but we don’t know who they are.

“At Easter a man in his nineties got £10 in his trolley with an anonymous not saying ‘enjoy.’

“A lady also had £20 last week with a message saying ‘God bless you.’”

Morrisons itself is no stranger to random acts of kindness.

Last year the store tried to bring a smile to people’s faces by leaving bunches of posies out for residents to find.

Florists from Morrisons left colourful bouquets across Hadleigh, Basildon and Southend as a random act of kindness.

The multi-coloured posies created from Germini flowers were placed in parks, bus stops and shopping areas for passers by to find and take home.

Speaking at the time, Grant Tuffield, manager of the Morrisons store in London Road, Hadleigh, said: “We hope that people who find these brightly-coloured posies across Hadleigh will pick them up, take them home, and enjoy having their little splash of warming colour in their homes.”
