THIRTY thousand pounds could pay for a great deal in Essex education.

Yet instead of being used productively, money that could pay for teachers and classrooms is being spent on buses.

These vehicles will not be overworked. They will transport children from Crays Hill travellers' camp to Crays Hill Primary School, just one mile away. A second bus will then help out, returning to the camp to pick up stragglers.

The scheme is self-evidently absurd, but the location says it all.

It is hard to imagine such an absurdity seeing the light of day anywhere else but the topsy-turvy world of Crays Hill.

This bus service is taking us all for a ride. It reinforces the suspicion there is one law for the Crays Hill travelling community and one for everyone else.

Now, instead of calling time, as it should, Essex County Council has found yet another way to pour taxpayers' money into the bottomless mire that is Crays Hill school.
