It is difficult to get people to believe in global warming when they've just been drenched in freezing water for the umpteenth time.

So I note more and more people are using the vague term climate change.

Nobody is going to stop the industrialised nations, more airports and bigger jets, more cars on our choked roads.

We talk a good ecology, but like a eunuch writing a sex manual, the practice and performance is sadly lacking.

"We're not going to stop doing anything - except produce even more hot air.

...My guess is that the first people in Essex were not human like us. Southend Museum holds a couple of Mousterian flint flakes. Not human as we know it, but not aliens. They were the old folk (neanderthals).

The other day in Shoreditch, I was at a British Museum storeroom where I gripped a hand-axe, a half of million years old from Boxgrove, Sussex. I was touching the same stuff as one of the old folk. Before the modern era, Britain was under ice.

Then there was a warm period. Then came the ice.

My hand-axe friend across the centuries probably perished from cold.

Strange now we may be doomed by global warming!
