FED-UP residents are not happy with contractors who left a pavement in a poor state for a week.

Workers from Virgin Media have been installing broadband equipment in Labworth Road, Atherstone Road and Beach House Gardens, Canvey, since April.

They restarted work in Labworth Road, but residents are dissatisfied with how the pavements have been torn up.

The contractors for Virgin Media have dug up a long strip to place the cables, and only half filled it in.

However, it is not straight and is wider in some parts than others.

Carer Jeannette Glover, 58, said: “It looks awful.

“I was so cheesed off when I saw it.

“I imagine they are going to come back to fill in the rest of it but I can’t see how they are going to make it look better.

“The first thing visitors look at is the front of your house and I don’t want people to see that.

“It was done on Monday last week and it has been left like this since.

“I would have thought they would have fixed it by now.”

She added that cracks were already beginning to show on her driveway.

A complaint has been made to the council, but Mrs Glover said that it asked them to wait until the work was completed, and then phone if they were not satisfied.

She added: “We are waiting to see what it looks like when they have finished.

“We knew there were problems when they did the other side of the road.

“They stopped for a couple of months, but now they have started again two weeks ago and have got half way up the road.” There are barriers up to prevent people tripping over the works, but Mrs Glover said the barriers had blocked her driveway.

She said that when she asked the workmen to move them so she could get her car out they were “brusque and abrupt”.

She has since moved the barrier slightly herself she can get on and off her drive.

There have previously been a number of complaints from residents about the work, including grass verges being damaged.

A spokesman from Virgin Media said that image shows the work halfway through the reinstation and it has since been completed.

They added: “Virgin Media is currently expanding its network in Canvey Island to bring ultrafast broadband speeds to more homes and businesses in the area.

"As we do so, we endeavour to minimise disruption and are working with our contractors to ensure that work is carried out with professionalism and at the highest standard. We apologise to residents for any inconvenience."
