HARRY Kyprianou is relishing his longest ever run in Southend United’s first team and remains determined to keep his place in the team.

The 20-year-old defender has started the last four matches at the heart of the Blues back four, despite John White’s return to full fitness.

And Kyprianou has now set his sights on becoming a regular member of the Shrimpers rearguard.

“I’m delighted to have been given this opportunity but it’s down to me now to keep the shirt and I hope I can continue to do so,” said Kyprianou.

“I’m learning in every game and gaining new experiences that comes with first team football.

“But I’m really enjoying it and it’s so much better when the team wins.”

Kyprianou’s fine defensive displays have helped Blues triumph in their last two matches.

The Shrimpers won 4-2 at Fleetwood Town on Saturday before narrowly seeing off AFC Wimbledon 1-0 on Tuesday night.

And the Cypriot has enjoyed playing his part.

“We’ve been delighted with the last two results,” said Kyprianou.

“The two games were quite different too. One we dominated for almost 90 minutes, making over 600 passes and scoring four goals, whereas on Tuesday night we battled for 90 minutes and won the game 1-0. But it’s especially pleasing that we’ve picked up maximum points in two very different games.”

And Kyprianou is now focusing on making it three wins in a row at home to Blackpool this weekend.

“Blackpool are up there so it will be a tough game,” said the defender.

“But we’ll be well prepared and we will be looking to continue our run and make it three wins in three.”

Kyprianou - who was voted man of the match on the Echo’s online poll following the win against AFC Wimbledon - looks set to partner Anton Ferdinand in defence. But he was always confident he would get a chance to impress this season.

“No club will make it through a season with just 11 players, and my ability to cover different positions will always improve my chances,” said Kyprianou.

“It’s just a matter of keeping patient and being ready when called upon.”
