BRAVE swimmers took on the cold seas of Southend in celebration of the turn of the new year.

The RNLI hosted the New Year's Day Dip at Jubilee Beach in Marine Parade to help raise funds for the seaside team.

Children and adults were all welcome to take part in the New Years Day Dip.

After taking part in the New Year's Day Dip, visitors were given a free cup of tea or coffee and a mince pie.

In 2015 and 2016 the event was held on Boxing Day, however, this year’s festive plunge was forced back a week as a result of the strong tides which could have been a danger to some swimmers on the day.

In 2016, more than £7,500 was raised at the event, which helped to support the Southend RNLI station next to Southend Pier.

The Southend RNLI lifeboat station is one of the busiest stations in the entire country.

The station responds to more than 100 incidents every year.

Since the Southend RNLI station was established in 1879, lifeboat crews in the area have save more than 2000 lives.
