TWO self-confessed adventurers are looking to conquer the Atlantic - by rowing boat.

Joshua Peck, 26, and Michael Brown, 27, from Basildon, will be rowing from New York to London in July.

The journey will see the pair row more than an estimated 6,000km over a target of 55 days.

Beating that target would see the men smash the current world record, held by Frank Samuelsen and George Harbo, from America, for more than 120 years.

Mr Peck believes that he and his rowing partner have a chance at beating that time frame.

He said: “We’re in for a good shot.

“We’re going to go for it. I’m not sure I want to spend any longer on the boat anyway.”

The men are not just undertaking the challenge to set a new world record. While on the trip, they are hoping to raise more than £60,000 for mental health charity Mind and PlasticOceans.

PlasticOceans, which aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution and how it impacts our waters, sea life and humans, is a particular passion for Mr Peck.

Mr Peck, who works at David Lloyd Gym, in Basildon, said: “I’ve been travelling to Australia and South Asia in the past.

“I saw the problems that plastic has caused in the waters out there. It’s a huge problem.

“I’ve been diving in coral reefs and the damage that has been done is horrific. I just don’t want it to get bad over here.

“The ocean wildlife is suffering as well.

“You see videos and watch shows and the effect that plastic has on marine animals is disastrous.”

The duo will be living on military rations during the trip and the boat will be environmentally friendly.

They have already started training for the challenge, which will see them making one million oar strokes each.

Mr Peck said: “We’re on rowing machines for 45 minutes each day. Along with that, we’re hip training, weightlifting and cross training.

“But we’re in for a shock. I spoke to Lee Spencer, the rowing marine, who told me no amount of training can prepare for the actual row.”

They need to raise £70,000 to set sail on their adventure and are holding a 24-hour sponsored row-a-thon at the gym to help them towards their target.
