A young baby died two days after an operation but doctors say the death and the operation were not linked, an inquest heard.

Jason Muotoh, 4, from Grays died at Basildon Hospital on October 6 2017.

The inquest heard that he had an operation for a PPV repair on October 4.

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a surgical procedure that involves removal of vitreous gel from the eye.

He then was suffering with a high temperature, diarrhoea and sickness and saw a GP on October 5 and was prescribed anti-biotics.

The next day, October 6, he was taken to Basildon Hospital where he suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

Doctor Al-Adnani, paediatric pathologist at St Thomas' Hospital, London carried out a post mortem examination including various tests on the boy's organs.

He gave evidence at the inquest, yesterday April 26.

Caroline Beasley-Murray, Senior Coroner at Essex Coroner's Court recorded that it was a sudden, unexplained death in childhood.

The doctor said: "I examined Jason, and he looked like a normal boy, nothing unusual externally at all.

"There were no signs of any issues following the operation. We looked at the organs, and the brain, and lungs were normal, we carried out a range of tests to find out a cause of death.

"We took small parts of the major organs to look for any signs of infections, but nothing was found. We were not able to find a specific cause of death.

"We do see this happen in young boys who are aged between one and three-years-old, we do not see that many cases like this involving girls.

"It is considered a natural cause of death."

He said that he tested for various signs of infections but the tests came back negative and that there were blood tests for infections which were also negative.

Mrs Beasley-Murray expressed her condolences to the family and said they loved the baby very much.
