CONCERNED residents and councillors fear too many planes are now flying over their Canvey homes.

Despite a lengthy consultation by Southend Airport held about the flight path over the island, some residents and community leaders have expressed concern.

David Manclark, 60, of Kings Park, Canvey, feels the noise is now simply too much - and wants the flight path looked at again.

He said: “When I am outside and the planes go overhead, we have to stop speaking to each other as we can’t hear what we are saying.

“This can be for between five and 10 minutes at any given time.

“I now feel that I can’t go out of my home due to the planes flying over.

“I have also spoken to my neighbours who are also as angry about the issue.

“It is annoying and seems to be much worse later in the week and during weekends.

“It is having an affect on my life and that’s not right.”

Councillors have also raised issues about planes flying too close to hazardous substance site, Oikos Storage Ltd.

Peter May, Canvey Independent councillor for Canvey Central, feels the issues that are worrying residents need to be looked at again.

He said: “With the fuel and hazardous sites on the island we could have an incident similar to that of 9/11 in America.

“I understand the noise worries too as the planed go over my house and it’s getting worse.

“There must be other places they can fly over.”

Martin Tucker, Canvey Town councillor, said there have been a repeated concerns about this.

He said: “We had meetings about this and are concerned as we have the fuel and hazardous substance sites on the island and is anything happened to these sites, it would catastrophic for Canvey.

“I understand the concerns and the planes fly over my house too.”

An Southend Airport spokesman said: “We always take the necessary steps to ensure we are the best possible neighbour to our community and have put a wide range of measures in place to ensure noise levels and environmental impact are kept to a minimum.

“We are very conscious of the communities which surround us at the airport.

“We routinely report to, and consult with, residents and many other stakeholders via the Airport Consultative Committee.”

The spokesman said that there are regulations in place about the prevention of major incidents that involve dangerous substances.
