ORGANISERS behind an annual raft race event are celebrating another huge success.

This year’s Canvey Rotary Raft Race saw 18 rafts competing to win £250.

The event was held from Thorney Bay Beach, Canvey, on Sunday and the beach and seafront were packed with about 2,000 spectators enjoying the event.

The race was held in four heats, with six rafts in three heats, and the first two in each heat going into the final.

The six teams in the final were The Indee Rose Trust, Fourth Canvey Columbus Explorers Sea Scouts, Monkswick Stables, GMD Hardware, Cast And Crew Theatre Workshop and Millennium Falcon.

The winners were Fourth Canvey Columbus Explorers taking the £250 first prize and Cast And Crew took the £100 second prize.

The race heats were started by the town mayor Barry Campagna and councillors Ray Howard and Peter May.

A spokesman for The Rotary Club thanked Canvey Bay Watch for keeping the benches tidy and also the scouts who helped out on the day.
