A NEW rail station at Southend pierhead, to replace the one destroyed by a fire in 2005, is being planned by the council.

Proposals are being submitted for new platforms with canopies and a control office.

The devastating 2005 blaze resulted in the complete destruction of the south station of the pier railway, McGinity's Bar and most of the remaining facilities at the pierhead.

The council pledged to get the pier back in operation as soon as possible and trains have been running to a temporary platform near the pierhead.

Councillor responsible for planning, Anna Waite, said: "We said we would move as soon as possible and we have done so already.

"However, the existing temporary platform is not satisfactory as a long-term solution.

"The new platforms, with canopies and a proper control office, will allow an improved train service to run along the pier, particularly in the high season when residents and visitors visit the pier in large numbers."
