The Basildon Centre was evacuated and the area nearby taped off.

Police were called after a man was making threats to staff, which saw the first floor of the Basildon Centre evacuated and staff on other floors told to stay at their desks. 

Police have since confirmed there have been no reports of a gun at the scene.

Residents have reported the town centre is in lock-down, with armed officers at the scene.

The cordon was lifted and the centre reopened just before 1pm.

Essex Police has issued a statement.

It reads: "We were called at 11.25am on Thursday, August 30 to reports of a man making threats in St Martins Square, Basildon.

"There are no reports of a firearm seen.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Andrew Baggott, leader of Basildon Council, said: "The safety of staff and the public is paramount.

"As far as I am aware there has been an incident involving one individual who has made threats to members of staff.

"Police are on the scene.

"In any incident like this, you must follow the advice of the emergency services and in this case they advised to clear the first floor and put the rest of the building on lockdown."
