SOUTH Essex MPs have backed a Government U-turn which will see children who need free school meals provided for throughout the summer holidays.

The Government has ditched its original decision not to offer free meals to children over the summer, after pressure from Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford.

The England forward received widespread support after urging the Government to reverse the decision.

Boris Johnson’s u-turn has pleased MP’s across South Essex, but the Prime Minister had attracted criticism through Marcus Rashford’s campaign.

James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, said: “I welcome the new Covid-19 Summer Food Fund which has been announced today, providing food vouchers covering the six-week holiday period.”

Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, also said he was “pleased” with the u-turn.

"I’m very pleased that in response to Marcus Rashford’s letter to MPs the Government has confirmed that they will supply free school meals to the most vulnerable children in our community.

“A welcome response from Downing Street and the Government.”

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, added: “I was delighted to hear theannouncement from the Government that there will be additional funding for aCovid Summer Food Fund to enable children who are eligible for free school meals to claim a six-week voucher.

“We are in extraordinary times and more than ever children will need a range of support during the school holidays.

“The Government has listened to those most in need, and will provide additional funding to ensure that no child ever goes hungry.

Boris Johnson’s spokesman, confirmed the decision yesterday: “We will be providing a Covid Summer Food Fund. This will provide food vouchers covering the six-week holiday period.”

Rebecca Harris, MP for Castle Point, said: “Some families are facing severe hardship because of the Coronavirus and I was glad to see the Government’s unprecedented announcement that we will be providing a £120m Covid summer food fund during the six week school holiday.

"This is in addition to the extra £63m for local authorities announced last week, to provide families & individuals with extra support in these tough times.”

John Baron, MP for Basildon and Billericay, said: "The coronavirus outbreak has called for government help and support in many different ways, and this is no exception. I am glad the Government has listened carefully and come to the right decision."
