A CLUB night for adults with learning or physical disabilities is launching in Southend high streets, offering a venue for people to socialise in a “safe and accessible” place.

The IronWorks, next to Hays Travel in the High Street, has announced it will hold its first Club Tuesday on February 14 - and every Tuesday from thereafter.

The unit, being run by Kiwi Community Events, is a community arts complex, with bosses stating the event is a place to bring adults with learning and, or physical disabilities together to party in a safe setting.

Christine Wilson, a shared lives carer in Southend, said this is wonderful opportunity and one she will be encouraging the people she cares for to make the most of.

She said: “I am so delighted that the IronWorks is opening up for an event like this on Tuesdays for people with learning and physical disabilities.

“It is a lovely venue and I feel it will be very well supported and very much needed.

“I support a few people with learning disabilities, so this is a wonderful opportunity for them.

“I will be taking some of them to this, as there are a lot of adults with learning disabilities who are fairly isolated, so this will be great.”

The IronWorks officially opened at the start of last year as an arts and cultural centre.

Councillor Matt Dent added: “It looks really good and sounds like a brilliant initiative that will really cater to some of the under catered groups in society.

“It really shows the IronWorks since it opened has been going from strength to strength and shows the value of having this in Southend.”

A spokesman for The IronWorks said: “We are so excited to announce our new venture. It will be wheelchair-accessible throughout the venue as well as breakaway quiet areas and an area for parents or carers to relax.

“We will offer snacks and drink throughout the evening, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, as well as top dance tunes from our resident DJ. Our opening night will be spectacular Valentine’s ball on Tuesday, February 14.

“Tickets are £5 and can be purchased online, or £7 at the door. Welcome mocktails are included.”

The first event will start at 6pm and finish at around 10pm.
