A FAMILY-RUN business renting out luxury VW campervans catapulted to success as Brits turned to staycations amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Rayleigh husband and wife Matt and Lyndsey Kelleher, aged 50 and 49 respectively, started Kickback Kampers in November 2021.

With Covid-19 making overseas travel almost impossible, would-be holidaymakers instead found themselves exploring staycations.

As a result, The Kelleher’s VW campervan rental business took off, going from strength to strength.

“We had our own camper van which Matt, who is big into water sports, would use for trips to seafront locations across the country,” Lyndsey explained.

“We loved taking the little trips, and thought that if we got a second van, we would be able to start renting them out and make a business of it.”

As business continues to thrive, with Brits gravitating towards cheaper holidays during the cost-of-living crisis, the couple are set to expand and buy a third vehicle.

“There are so many amazing and beautiful places across the UK,” Lyndsey said.

“People might think they prefer beach holidays in Spain, but I would encourage everyone to try a campervan holiday, exploring our beautiful country side.

"You never know, you might just fall in loved like we did.

“From the Lake District, to NC500, to Scotland, there are countless stunning places to visit."

She added: “We really live in a beautiful country, with so many amazing places to visit, and it’s all within quite easy driving distance.”

The two-tone VW Waikiki camper van, which takes its look from the iconic Type 2 VW Transporter, has proved popular with customers.

The modern take on a motor-head classic comes fully equipped with cooking and dining utensils, comfortably sleeping four with solar panels, a bike rack, and a portaloo with privacy tent.

“The campervans come with everything you will ever need to just get on the road and explore the country from a different perspective,” Lyndsey said.

“The kids love going out in them, they love it, it’s like a little adventure and they find it so much fun.

“And with so much storage space, you can take absolutely everything you would ever need on a holiday with you.”
