AN URGENT warning has been issued to residents after a disposable barbecue starting a fire at the recycling centre.

Residents are now being urged to think carefully about how they dispose of barbecues after it was revealed a fire broke out at the Pitsea Recycling Centre, in Pitsea Hall Lane.

Love Essex, which acts on behalf of the Essex Waste Partnership, said the fire was caused by the incorrect disposal of a disposable barbecue.

Bosses are now urging residents to please ensure their safe disposal if using these tips of barbecues.

Craig Rimmer, councillor for Pitsea South East ward, said: “It is extremely concerning.

“I think people have to take responsibility for having to dispose of their waste. They have to ask themselves, what am I doing?

“It puts everybody at risk, other users of the centre at risk, it puts staff at risk.”

He added: “It is just not acceptable really.

“I just urge people to please take caution. Just follow the instructions on the disposable barbecues of how you can safety dispose of them. Follow the instructions and be safe.”

Last year, Love Essex said one of the main causes of fires at recycling centres in Essex was barbecues.

Love Essex posted some advice for residents to follow when using them to prevent any fires.

A spokesman added: “Over the recent bank holiday, a fire was caused at Pitsea Recycling Centre due to the incorrect disposal of a disposable barbecue.

“Enjoy your barbecues this summer, but please ensure their safe disposal with these simple tips:

“Make sure the barbecue has cooled fully before disposing of it in a general rubbish bin. If in doubt, please carefully distinguish any hot coals with water.

“Do not add to your compost heap.

“Do not attempt to recycle.

“Alternatively, cook your food at home and bring as a delicious addition to a picnic.”
