Campaigners are outraged after a south Essex council banned the screening of a “political documentary” over fears it could “damage” community relations.

Basildon Socialist Party and Basildon Breakthrough Party had organised the showing of the documentary “Oh, Jeremy Corbyn: The Big Lie”.

The film explores the world of political deceit and alleged anti-Semitic smears.

It was due to be screened at George Hurd Centre, in Audley Way, Basildon, today, at 7pm.

Organisers claim it was planned for “weeks and weeks” but say they were only told “informally” by staff at the centre on Tuesday the showing would not be going ahead. The group says it was contacted by Basildon Council the next day confirming the cancellation.

The campaigners claim the council had received complaints that the pro-Corbyn film is anti-Semitic, which the organisers have branded “false, malicious, and unsubstantiated complaints”.

David Murray, Basildon Socialist Party secretary, said: “Jewish members of the Socialist Party and Breakthrough have been deeply offended by the implication.”

In response, Basildon Council say the booking was declined as it could be considered to “damage the strong community relations” strived for in the borough.

A spokesman for Basildon Council said: “All bookings at council-run venues are reviewed carefully, and on this occasion the booking was declined after it was brought to our attention that the film could be considered to damage the strong community relations in the borough we strive to support.

“The council have informed the party who made the room booking and explained the reasons for our decision.”

Mr Murray says the groups will now assemble outside of the centre at the same time on Friday evening to “reflect”.

He added: “Supporters of free speech will now assemble outside the George Hurd Centre at 7pm on Friday, June 30, to discuss the ban, and reflect on the establishment campaign.

“We will also meet with anyone who hasn’t heard about the last-minute cancellation.

“To add, we have no issue with the centre, or its staff, who provide excellent service to the community.”
