A POLICE cordon was set up and three people were arrested after a man suffered a serious head injury in an attack in Westcliff.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital after the incident in Hamlet Court Road.

Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service say they were called at around 7.35pm on Monday.

A man and two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of causing GBH.

A cordon was in place at the scene overnight following the assault as police carried out their investigations.

James Courtenay, Tory Southend councillor responsible for community safety and public protection, admitted: “It is a worry.

“I join the appeal for anyone who saw anything to come forward and talk to the police or Crimestoppers.

“It is always disappointing to hear about these things, but fortunately they are fairly rare.

“However, it understandably makes people nervous, so it is a real shame. Incidents like this have an impact on people who go out in the community.

“My wishes go to the victim for his recovery.”

Reports of social media suggest it was part of a wider disturbance and fight that had broke out. However Essex Police said they were not aware of these reports.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 7.37pm on Monday, with reports of an assault in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff.

“We sent one ambulance and took a man to Southend Hospital for further care.”

A spokesman for Essex Police added: “Three people have been arrested on suspicion of causing GBH in connection with an assault that occurred shortly before 7.35pm on Monday in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff.

“The victim, a man 50s, was taken to hospital after he sustained a head injury. The men, 41 and 18, and a teenage boy, have been released on bail until October 2.”
