TRAIN users are set to be faced with with even more disruption as the Greater Anglia line between Southend and Wickford closes for three consecutive weekends next month.

Yesterday, Greater Anglia confirmed that engineers will be working to “maintain the safety and reliability” of the line but it will result in a series of rail replacement services.

Trains between Wickford and Southend Victoria will be replaced by buses on September 9 and 10, September 16 and 17, as well as September 23 and 24.

Trains between Shenfield and Southend Victoria will also be replaced by buses on October 1.

It comes after a year of disruption on the trains with numerous strikes resulting in reduced services for commuters.

Mark Walker, Network Rail Anglia route infrastructure engineer, said: “An efficient and safe railway is a well-maintained railway.

“While there is never a good time to close a busy and important line, maintenance work is important to keep trains running safely and reliably for passengers and freight journeys.

“I would like to thank all our customers for their patience while we carry out these essential maintenance tasks.”

The work will cover a range of activities including maintenance of overhead electrification equipment and inspections to prevent de-wirements, installation of new switches to reduce delays significantly, and vegetation clearance to reduce the risk of leaf fall affecting train operations.

There will also be jet washing of platforms at Rochford station, and replacement of stonework at Southend Victoria station to eliminate potential tripping hazards.

Finally, maintenance of point heaters will take place at Southend Victoria, to prevent sections of the tracks from freezing in one position during cold weather.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, stressed the importance of these works.

He added: “This work is extremely important to help maintain the safe and reliable running of the railway. We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while it is carried out.

“A rail replacement service will run while the work takes place and passengers are advised to check before they travel and allow more time for their journey.”
