JAZZ guitarist Tony Remy will be performing live at Churchills, Southend, this Sunday lunchtime. A versatile musician, the North Londoner learned to play piano, flute and saxophone, at an early age, before picking up a guitar. He plays a hard-edged, rhythmically driven brand of jazz and soulful blues. Tony started his professional music career during the mid Eighties and recalls: “I had a band called Cube 60 with Winston Clifford, Joe Bashorun and Nick Cohen, back in 1984. He said: “We were crazy about Miles Davis, Weather Report, Steps, the Brecker Brothers, so were writing and playing that stuff. “I also had a rock band called Secretary Bailey. Then in 1985, Cube 60 developed into Desperately Seeking Fusion with Patrick Clahar, Jason Rebello and Julian Crampton. That was really my first outing as bandleader.” Tony released his first solo album Boof in 1993 on American jazz/fusion label GRP. Following an unhappy period and change of label, his second album, Metamorfollow-G, was released on Alltone Records in 1997. Tony’s playing draws on many different guitar styles, such as John Scofield, Hiram Bullock, Mike Stern, George Benson, Jimi Hendrix and BB King, who have all contributed to shaping the way he plays. He has also toured and recorded with musicians, including Courtney Pine, Gary Barlow, Simply Red and Matt Bianco. Admission to the venue in Tylers Avenue is £6, students £4 and free for under-16s. The show starts at 1pm. Call 01702 468646.
