I could not believe my eyes as I walked my children to school through Coombewood Drive in Thundersley and saw the workmen taking down the beautiful cherry trees that adorned the pavements.

What an earth is the council thinking of? A person who lives in Coombewood Drive told me the residents had tried to fight the decision, but the council said the trees were damaging pavements.

What a load of rubbish. I can remember these lovely trees being planted about 35 years ago.

I also recall the pavements being dug up by workmen for various reasons on many occasions over the years and it was their shoddy repair work that left the pavements in a state of disrepair.

Fair enough, one or two trees were slightly over-grown and you could see the roots above ground level, but why not just deal with those in an appropriate way and not take the whole lot out for no reason at all?

Can the council not think of anything more worthwhile to spend taxpayers’ money on?

Are the residents who live in this street not entitled to have their say in this matter? Surely a majority vote to keep the trees (23 out of 30) tells the council something?

Years ago Thundersley was like coming to the country and this was one of the few pretty roads left leading down to the woods. It made a very pleasant stroll.

Now, it just looks like any other road. Bland, boring and miserable, like the council which made this ridiculous decisions.
