IT took a major struggle to get it staged in the first place, but now there’s no stopping Woyzeck.

Squeaky Clean’s production of the classic experimental play is being reprised as a highlight of Southend’s first Fringe Festival.

The Squeaky Clean theatre group first set out to stage Woyzeck in January. The play was seen as the ideal vehicle to introduce London-style pub theatre to Southend. The only trouble, in a town noted for the quantity and range of its boozers, was finding a pub.

Initially billed for the bar of the new Empire Theatre, Woyzeck became homeless when the venue shut its doors over night. Squeaky Clean then moved on to the Royal, and that shut too.

They had to postpone production at the Alex due to the absence of a performing licence. Now, Squeaky Clean return to the Alex, this time brandishing a licence.

Offbeat and verging on the surreal, Woyzeck is ideal fringe material. But if audiences feel the need for something a bit more traditional, they won’t have far to go to get a pint of bitter.
