In My View, Southend councillor Anna Waite made a good point about another Thames crossing this end of the south Essex coast (June 11).

I agree with her there should be another crossing this end of the Thames, but why stop there?

Why only a road bridge?

Why not road and rail bridges. Let’s have a direct train service between Essex and Kent.

It’s amazing you can stand on the shoreline, anywhere from Shoebury up the Thames coastline and look across to Kent.

Yet, if you want to get over there by train, you have to travel all the way up to London, cross over London, then travel down the other side of the Thames.

Road and rail bridges have been in existence for a very long time. One of the first in the world is the high-level bridge over the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead, built more than 150 years ago and still working today.

So come on all you people in the planning department, let’s have a really big scheme – a direct road and rail bridge for Essex and Kent.
