A declining membership has forced Rochford’s twinning association with Haltern, in Germany, to close.
Formed in 1984 with the support of Rochford Council, extensive cultural and commercial links were created alongside many personal friendships.
Our German friends have a committment to twinning, even naming a main road in Haltern Rochfordstrasse.
They receive invaluable modest financial and resource support from their council because it sees the economic and educational value of twinning.
Rochford, in its new signs, ignored our twin town.
Over the last few years it has become increasingly difficult to attract new members and raise funds but, although it is a sad time, I know many longlasting friendships have been formed which will continue.
I am happy to remain a focal point for anyone wanting to make contact with Haltern, for business or pleasure.
