I was very pleased to read the headline Canvey Flood Scheme Sunk (Echo January 4).

The scheme by the Environment Agency was ill thought out and would have destroyed the freshwater bird sanctuary Castle Point Council and the RSPCA have worked so hard to create. It is a victory for common sense.

I was however disappointed with the way in which Castle Point MP Bob Spink and councillor Dave Blackwell appear to be receiving credit for blocking the scheme.

Councillors like Pam Challis and Ray Howard, working hard with their colleagues in Thames Gateway South Essex, have pressured the Government and the agency at every turn to block the scheme.

Not once at any of the meetings with ministers and senior civil servants that I attended, or indeed helped to set up, did I see our MP.
