Congratulations to Southend Council on reducing youth crime and in increasing recycling (Dec 30).

However, it continues to amaze me that when the council goes ahead with projects like the Garons Park swimming pool and the landslide prevention at Leigh, local businesses don't even get the opportunity to tender.

I’m a director of a piling company based in Rayleigh.

Our rigs range from small 1.5 tonnes to larger 30 tonnes, so we are able to deal with both large and small projects in the construction industry.

However, instead of approaching companies like mine, the council uses contractors from outside the area.

Wouldn’t it be better to support local companies which employ local people, which in turn would reduce unemployment, especially in dark times of a global recession?
